Brentford will likely be without their top scorer for the next few months. Ivan Toney (14 goals in 21 games) could be sentenced to a month’s suspension after admitting cheating in betting.
In November and December, he was charged with breaking gambling rules on a total of 262 counts between 2017 and 2019. He has now admitted to a “significant number” of these, but denied some of the allegations, as reported by Britain’s “Sun”. However, there is no evidence that the 26-year-old has bet on matches in which he was involved.
Rule E8 of the Football Association of England (FA) Handbook states that players are prohibited from betting, instructing others or giving information to third parties which is not generally known and which could give them a gambling advantage. The Disciplinary Committee will consider the sentence in the coming weeks.
What sanctions are possible?
It is therefore quite possible that the Englishman will be suspended later this season. Past examples show what could threaten Toney.
Joey Barton (40) was suspended for 18 months in 2017 for betting on a total of 1,260 football matches between 2006 and 2013. On appeal, the sentence was reduced to 13 months.
In 2020 Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schär’s teammate at Newcastle, was handed a 10-week suspension and fined £70,000. The 32-year-old, who then played for Atletico Madrid, was found guilty in four of the seven counts. But he didn’t admit it. (che)
