Joao Cancelo (28) has been playing for Bayern Munich since January. Before that, the technically adept full-back spent three and a half years in Manchester and experienced traumatic things.
In an interview with “O Jogo”, he shares a story that has shaped him to this day. A scar above his right eye will always remind him of New Year’s Eve 2021.
What happened? Cancelo was about to finish the year at home with his family – mother, daughter, father and uncle – and a friend when four burglars broke into his home and threatened him and his family.
The then-City star wanted to push back an attacker, took a blow: “This is where I will be scarred for the rest of my life. It was mainly the feeling of powerlessness. Because I would be my face for my club – imagine what I would do for my family, which is the most important thing in my life.”

The next day, Cancelo played a top match in London against Arsenal with Man City. “I must confess that I didn’t feel well enough to play,” Cancelo reflects, explaining why he played anyway: “It felt like a defeat that they could discourage and upset me so much.
