Amancio Amaro is our absolute historical reference

For us, as well as for Victoria CF, Amancio Amaro is undoubtedly the absolute historical benchmark, although later players such as Lucas, Raúl Carner, Juan Carlos Real and Róber Suárez Piero appeared, who distinguished themselves in Spanish professional football.

No one has ever reached the levels reached by Amancio Amaro, who was part of the best team in the history of Spanish football, that Real Madrid that won every possible title for so long.

It should be remembered that Amancio became a UEFA representative, in that team that gathered all the great European players of his time, such as Bobby Charlton, Gianni Rivera, Eusebio… That the man from A Coruña has been on this list and at that level for years is a pride for everyone, starting with our entity, Victoria CF, and despite the fact that he went to Real Madrid at a very young age, after going through Deportivo, a team where he also set sporting milestones such as promotion and top scorer in the Second Division.

Interestingly, other members of that generation, which was very good, followed the same path, such as Jaime Blanco (who later went to Oviedo and Hércules) and Moncha Parada (who also played for Rayo Vallecano and Salamanca).

He never lost touch with his roots and came in the summer, and that’s when we met in A Coruña. My memories of Amancio as a player are very distant, to my childhood, when he won the Eurocup, the first important title in the history of the Spanish team. I remember that there were five Galicians in that team.

With José María Paniz as club president, who was a great friend, Amancio donned the black and white jersey again to play in the Victoria tournament, for the benefit of the nursing home. It was the last phase of his career, but it gives a good indication of Amancio’s personal quality.
