Stan Wawrinka’s start to the clay court season was a great success. The Vaudois won in Marrakech in the first round of the ATP 250 tournament against the Spaniard Albert Ramos-Viñolas 6:1, 6:4.
Although Wawrinka (ATP 82) has only won one of his first five matches this year, the victory is no surprise. The three-time Grand Slam champion has already won the previous eight matches against Ramos-Viñolas (ATP 103).
Five days after his 39th birthday, Wawrinka in Morocco does not give the three-year-younger Spaniard any chance. In the first set the Swiss quickly took the lead with two breaks and 5:0, in the second round he made the decisive service breakthrough after a rebreak by Ramos-Viñolas to make the score 5:4. In total the game only takes 75 minutes.
Rising Argentina as opponent in the eighth finals
In the eighth finals, Wawrinka will face the rising Argentinian Mariano Navone. The 23-year-old clay court specialist, who is 22 places better than the Swiss in the world rankings, reached the final as a qualifier at the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro in mid-February. Navone had never won a match on the ATP tour before. (SDA)
