The German Football Association (DFB) has responded to criticism over the design of the squad numbers on the national team’s new jerseys and announced an improvement. “The DFB checks numbers 0 to 9 and then submits numbers 1 to 26 to UEFA for assessment. None of the parties involved saw any proximity to Nazi symbolism in the development process of the shirt design,” the association said in a statement to X.
Context: The number 4 in the new design was reminiscent of a rune, the number 44 resembled the runes of the SS during the National Socialist era. Although no national players wear this number, it can be ordered on personalized jerseys through official channels over the internet.
There should be an “alternative design of number 4”.
The DFB takes “the information very seriously” and does not want to “provide a platform for discussion”. Therefore, “an alternative design for number 4 is now being developed”. Manufacturer Adidas has also announced that the number 44 will be blocked from its online stores.
The DFB team wore the new jerseys for the first time last week during the international matches against France and the Netherlands. (AFP/sbe)
