29-year-old Gilles Roulin announced his retirement from skiing on Instagram on Wednesday evening. No quick action, as he says.
“I decided to end my career after the Swiss championships,” Roulin said in his video message. He would like to thank his parents, his skiing colleagues and friends, without whom a career as a skier would hardly have been possible. “It was an incredible journey.”
In a statement from Swiss-Ski, the speed specialist commented on his motives. Even before the season he noticed that something was different: “Especially in the beginning it just felt different than before, the willingness and the will were not really there anymore and so I had to realize that the path was now clear that I had to go in a different direction.”
Farewell race in Davos
Roulin made his World Cup debut in February 2017 in Kvitfjell (No.). Since then, the speed specialist has finished in the top ten of the World Cup four times, his best result being 4th place in the downhill in Val Gardena (It) in December 2017. The Zurich native was never enough for a podium finish.
Roulin was no longer able to build on his best performances last season; his best result was 21st place in the Super-G in Bormio (It).
Roulin completed his final races at the Swiss Championships in Davos. The downhill takes place on April 4, followed two days later by the Super-G. There he was able to say goodbye to the ski circus with a second Swiss championship title; in 2019 he already won the title in the Super-G.
