Former Spanish national president Luis Rubiales faces a prison sentence after the kissing scandal at the Women’s World Cup. The Spanish Public Prosecution Service is demanding a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for the 46-year-old who sexually assaulted national player Jennifer Hermoso (33) on the mouth during the awards ceremony after the World Cup final victory. This is evident from court documents, which are available as copies from the AFP news agency.

The Public Prosecution Service also wants Rubiales, who is accused of assault and coercion, to pay Hermoso compensation of at least 50,000 euros. The incident on August 20, 2023, a few minutes after Spain’s World Cup victory in Australia, sparked international outrage. Under pressure, Rubiales resigned from his position in September and the world association FIFA banned the Spaniard for three years.

Rubiales is also being investigated in a separate case for corruption related to his association activities. The ex-president has been living in the Dominican Republic for some time, where he works for national associations – mainly for baseball due to his FIFA ban. (AFP/str)
