Michelle Gisin (30) has a lead of more than a second in the second run of the slalom at the Swiss Championships at Lenzerheide, the title is only a formality. But shortly before the finish, the double podium finish of last winter’s World Cup deliberately braked, making Nicole Good (26) Swiss champion.

With the maneuver, Gisin shows that he takes into account the young drivers, who lose less valuable FIS points due to a smaller gap. But was the brakeman in question honest?

Mahrer praises Gisin

Former Swiss skier Daniel Mahrer (62) has a clear opinion about this: “It’s absolutely fine for me. The Swiss championships should be a platform for young female drivers and they should be able to score points here. Hats off to Michelle, for me it was absolutely the right decision from a sporting point of view,” the 1991 World Cup bronze winner told Blick.

According to Mahrer, as an experienced World Cup rider, Gisin has other goals than a Swiss championship title, while the FIS points are extremely important for the young riders.

“For us it was more serious”

When Mahrer was active, the Swiss Championships had a different status: “For us, things were even more serious. Everyone was always at the start and the racing was serious, the fastest won.”

But how could the Swiss championships be made more attractive for top athletes again? Mahrer has an idea: “You just do FIS races and invite a few top drivers, who then have to finish in the top 10 as a requirement.”
