What event changed your life?
Marcel Dettling:
Married to my wife Priska 14 years ago. From that moment on I got serious (laughs). Serious: Because my mother died when I was twelve, I grew up with my grandmother. We had to be there early. I now have a great team with Priska, we help each other, which is very nice.

What would you have liked to be as a child?
Farmer. Anything else was never an option. When my father went to the stable in the evening, I was always there. The only time I wasn’t that excited was when my siblings were watching Heidi movies on TV and I messed up.

Who were you in love with as a teenager?
For Julia Roberts in ‘Pretty Woman’. She still looks great to this day.

What did your room look like when you were 16?
The walls are covered in posters of cows and athletes. My favorite hockey club was Rapperswil Jona Lakers, and FCB in football – I can’t say that too loudly (laughs).

What is your nickname?
In the early years I was always the Gädeler – the one who still had to go to the stable. In the evening and early morning.

Why the 'money and fertilizer alliance' is crumbling

Do only the farmers benefit from it?
Why the ‘money and fertilizer alliance’ is crumbling

When was the last time you cried?
Bad news regularly bothers me. Such as the recent mountain accident in Zermatt. Since I became a father, I react even more emotionally.

What was the last thing you prayed for?
Every evening we pray with our children to the guardian angels.

How would you like to die?
Not only. And hopefully peace with everyone.

Who were you jealous of recently?
I’m not the jealous type at all. If someone knows more about a subject than I do, I will refer that person. I’m not jealous of my wife either. When I’m in Bern I don’t have to call her every evening, we trust each other.

What was the last thing you dreamed about?
That I have to bring in the hay because it’s raining. Funny, in the winter.

What quality would you rather not have?
I sometimes find it difficult to say no. I’m a good listener and have a lot of patience – but then I miss the opportunity to say: well, I have to move on!

What are you currently learning that you are not very good at yet?
I urgently need to take a French course. I practice by chatting often with my colleagues from French-speaking Switzerland.

What do other people think about you that might not be true?
That everything is easy for me. But especially when I have performances or give speeches, I prepare well. The content must be correct, otherwise I will not be satisfied.

What is the last thing you do at night before going to bed?
Kissing my wife.

What should not be missing in your household?
I’m a cheese tiger. But please only use mild cheese such as Emmentaler or Tilsiter, it will not give you bad breath.

Your favorite food?
Spaghetti carbonara.

And drink?
Kafi Herb Lutz.

What do you spend the most money on?
For agricultural machinery. Since I’m not at home that much, I want my people to have an easier time.

What do you reward yourself with?
With nut chocolate.

What is your favorite board game?
Jackets. I also have the Jass app on my phone.

Who are your favorite heroes?
Maybe that’s a Schwyzer thing now: the old three Confederates. They fought so that we could have a good life and live in freedom. Nowadays we give things away so carelessly.

Do you have a tick?
I’m always afraid of oversleeping. That’s why I check my cell phone alarm three times in the evening.

Which day do you want to relive?
The wedding day. At the end of May in a small village church that was almost bursting. More than 300 guests came. Then I had to put on bright yellow ski overalls and ski down a specially prepared slope. My wife had to mow with the saw. A fun and beautiful day.
