Silvan Widmer, you and Mainz are in the middle of a relegation battle. What does that do to you?
If things don’t go well sportingly, it also has an impact on daily life. I can’t just ignore it. This is personally close to my heart. But I am lucky to have a family with two children who distract me. This makes it easier to build up the necessary distance.
Former FCZ coach Bo Henriksen should get Mainz out of the crisis. What is your impression after four weeks?
A super guy. He had a great influence on the team from the start. He has an extremely positive charisma. Bo is so full of energy. With his style he infected us and brought new life into the business. He asks a lot of us in training. He challenges us mightily – day after day. Bo is absolutely the right man for us.
You have been captain in Mainz since last season. You were not in the starting line-up in the 2-0 win against Bochum.
Bo explained this to me before the match, but it remains between him and me. What is important is that we save ourselves; we must not be relegated. It’s about the club and the entire region – and not about individual players. I played the last half hour against Bochum and luckily it turned out well.
You missed the start of the season due to an ankle injury. How difficult was that?
It was the longest injury break of my career. After the operation I did not attend team training for five months. I had to build everything almost from scratch. Luckily I haven’t had a relapse. I suffered with the Nati and Mainz from my couch. It wasn’t easy to stand by and do nothing.
The last matches of the national team were very unsatisfactory. What did you notice about the television?
We had very good phases, but also phases where we seemed very restless. The opponents scored goals from half chances. In the future, we must keep our concentration high until the end and not let the opponent enter our zone.
How do you see your status?
I remain captain in Mainz. And with the national team I hope I can help the team with my comeback. Before my injury I played almost all the matches. I do my best to promote the euro.
The European Championship group match against Germany will be special.
Germany is a very crazy football country. I often get questions about the game. The respect of the Germans is great. They know that Switzerland is a difficult opponent. And that’s how we want to come across.
