He stands there with a broad chest and an almost equally wide smile. “I am very proud to be here again,” says Becir Omeragic. He had to wait almost three years before being called up to the national team again. “A very nice feeling. And I hope my journey continues,” said the 22-year-old from Geneva at the training camp in La Manga.

The central defender from Montpellier earned his nomination with consistently strong performances in Ligue 1. “I always believed in it and fought for it,” says Omeragic. Most recently, however, he had to suffer heavily in the 2:6 defeat against PSG. The star ensemble with Kylian Mbappé confused the defense after the break when the score was 2-2.

In the end, the Frenchman celebrated a hat-trick and made the defensive players look like schoolboys. A hard but educational lesson for Omeragic. «The pace and level were incredibly high – a very good experience for me. With Mbappé you never know what he will do with the ball.” Ben Yedder from Monaco was also very strong. “But Mbappé is the best striker I have ever played against,” says Omeragic in awe.

Shock due to a migraine attack

The Bosnian-born man got his humility and modesty from his family, who supported him, especially during his long period of suffering. During his five years at FC Zurich, the highly touted talent was injured so often that the market value curve reflects his ups and downs. “I had a very difficult time,” says Omeragic.

Debuted at FCZ at the age of 17 and became Swiss champion at the age of 20. In between, a broken fibula, many minor injuries, followed by an injury to the thigh and later also to the meniscus. ‘I’ve learned to deal with it. But I had to be very strong in my head.”

Occasional migraine attacks worsened the situation. “Once I even had a seizure on the field when the sunlight was very strong,” Omeragic remembers, “that was a shock to me.”

Fight against relegation

Since his move from Super League to Ligue 1 last summer, the headaches have disappeared. He can’t explain it either, but he seems to like the climate on the coast – together with his girlfriend. «Life in Montpellier is very nice. Beautiful weather, great city – we have everything we need here.” His contract runs until June 2028.

The only thing he’s worried about right now is the table. 14th place and only a slim lead of one point on the relegation place. “The situation is difficult at the moment, but the quality of the team is there to stay in the league,” says Omeragic with a serious expression, knowing that his future with the national team is closely linked to Montpellier being in Ligue 1 stays.
