For years, FC Basel had the reputation of being the Bayern Munich of Switzerland. Now, despite the sporting decline, the small FCB could again follow the example of the large FCB. Since the future of coach Thomas Tuchel (50) in Munich became clear, things are going well for Bayern again.

The FCB officials would do well to finally put an end to the contract poker around Fabio Celestini (48) – regardless of whether the cooperation should last until after the summer or not. Basel’s coach recently announced that they agreed on everything. But the official announcement about a contract extension is still a long time coming. What actually speaks for the Lausanne resident? And what about him?

Pro Celestini

The point average: In the Super League, Celestini’s points average still stands at 1.63 points per match. This is neither masterful nor up to the Basel standards of old. But: If you extrapolate this value over the entire season, FCB would be in third place and fully on course for Europe.

The Barry Redemption: Thierno Barry (21) has scored eight goals for FCB so far, seven of them under Celestini. The coach is primarily responsible for finally breaking the knot with the young Frenchman. When he takes over at the end of October, Barry initially drops out of the starting lineup. Before the winter break, Celestini talks to his striker and sends him on holiday to clear his head. The measure is fruitful. This year the 1.95 meter tall boy starts all nine league matches and scores five times.

The consistency: Celestini is already the sixth coach in David Degen’s almost three-year era. A new coaching change throws FCB back to square one. The crisis of recent years has made it clear: without consistency in the selection and in the coaching chairmanship, the sporting decline will continue unabated.

The youth: While the road from the FCB campus to the professional team seemed to be a dead end for years, Celestini with Leon Avudallahu (20) and Roméo Beney (19) once again puts his trust in the Basel players. Another example: When Dominik Schmid (25) was suspended against Winterthur (3-1), the FCB coach let 16-year-old Marvin Akahomen start from the start.

Against Celestini

The shape curve: Five defeats from the last seven games, including the bitter performance in the cup quarter-finals against Lugano (3:4 nP): After a convincing start, Basel’s form curve under Celestini has been pointing downwards again lately. Even if the FCB coach wants to fight to the end to get into the Champions Group, the uncomfortable reality is a relegation battle.

The Sleepyheads: 0:2 against Lugano, 0:1 against Lausanne-Sport, 0:3 against YB – three times in a row the team from Basel fell behind after the starting phase. Celestini must therefore tolerate the accusation that he does not seem to be able to get his players really enthusiastic in the dressing room.

Past: With the exception of the Sion debacle, Celestini has achieved rapid success at each of his former clubs. He leads Lausanne back to the Super League, qualifies for the Europa League with Lugano and wins the cup in Lucerne. But Celestini has never been the builder of a long-term project. All of his previous positions ended in dismissal; with the exception of Lausanne, he has never held office for more than two years.

The big games: FCB collected only one point out of a total of 24 against their direct basement rivals Lausanne-Sport, GC and Lausanne-Ouchy. Celestini was clearly unable to prepare the team for big matches: Celestini was also unable to prevent the club’s devastating cup match against Lugano. These are not good prospects for the relegation round, in which red and blue will once again meet all direct opponents in the battle to stay in the competition.

And what if Celestini doesn’t want to anymore?

FCB boss David Degen (41) announced in the fan podcast ‘Yyneruggt’ that a contract extension had not yet been reached because of Celestini’s ideas. The FCB coach must demand a team with which he can play for the title as soon as possible. That will only be the case next season at the big FCB from the Bundesliga.
