On the Super League championship race: why even YB should hope Servette becomes champion

Too much success is not healthy. If you always win, it will eventually go to your head. As Basel won titles after titles until they had won the league eight times in a row by 2017, at a certain point it was no longer enough to simply win.

There must be successes with flair, verve and a little bow on top, but also regular great moments in the European Cup. After the change of ownership, this culminated in the unfortunate “17 points” statement from FCB neo-sports director Marco Streller.

Of course it doesn’t sound that way at YB yet, they still don’t like big things in Bern’s management team. But similar trends are emerging. There is grumbling in the Wankdorf stands as the victories go unadorned. Three defeats in a row, only one point ahead of pursuer Servette? The coach is gone.

Would Raphaël Wicky have accomplished the turnaround on the YB sidelines and defended the championship title? We will never know. Now interim coach Joël Magnin has to take care of that. And all of football in Switzerland, including YB fans, must hope he doesn’t succeed.

Not because Magnin isn’t a capable coach. But because serial champions are never good for anyone. Football thrives on feelings. And if you want to feel something when you celebrate victories, you have to lose every now and then. Failure motivates you. This applies from the ordinary fan to the club boss. That’s why it sounds strange, but it’s true: Even YB has to hope that Servette will become champion this season.
