Legal success for former world champion Simona Halep before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne VD.
The CAS drastically reduces the ban imposed on the Romanian tennis player for two doping violations: a four-year break becomes a nine-month break.
Blocked since October 2022
The ban took effect in October 2022 and was originally scheduled to last until 2026. According to the CAS ruling, 32-year-old Halep can now return to the WTA tour at any time.
After a three-day hearing in early February, the sports court concluded that Halep’s positive test came from a “contaminated supplement” and that the abnormalities in her biological passport could be related to a “surgical procedure”, according to a statement.
“Never deliberately taken prohibited substances”
Halep, who triumphed at the French Open in 2018 and won Wimbledon in 2019, has always maintained her innocence and assured in September that she had “never deliberately ingested banned substances”. (SDA/yap)
