This winter I experienced one disappointment after another: AJ Ginnis.

Last winter, AJ Ginnis (29) wrote a ski fairy tale. At the World Championships in Courchevel/Méribel (Friday), the technical specialist from Greece sensationally won silver in the slalom. And that only 15 days after he reached the World Cup podium for the first time.

A week after his medal coup, Ginnis almost experienced the next highlight of his career. He will probably celebrate his first World Cup victory in Palisades Tahoe (USA). But the party doesn’t last long. Shortly after crossing the finish line, he was disqualified due to a merger.

Part of the sport

This season Ginnis cannot repeat last season’s results. In nine slaloms he finished in the top 14 four times, but was eliminated in the first run of the remaining five races. Definitely not what a vice world champion wants to show. Especially since he became a national hero in his home country. And most recently it happened to him in both Palisades Tahoe and Aspen (USA), one after the other.

The disappointment about this is great. “We tried everything, but skiing 50 seconds was not on the agenda today,” he wrote on Instagram. And explains what is currently bothering him, besides the failures. “It’s pretty devastating not to be able to feel the left side of your lower body,” Ginnis said. Apparently, the athlete is currently suffering from knee problems. On Instagram he repeatedly posts photos of fluid being sucked from his knee.

Still, Ginnis is glad he at least tried. Because the vice world champion knows that it is part of the sport. “We will learn to be better and move on,” he says optimistically.

Continuing also means participating in the last two slaloms of the winter. Ginnis wants to attack again next Saturday in the slalom in Kranjska Gora. (beer)
