Show of strength from Tadej Pogacar.

With 81 kilometers to go, Pogacar attacks in a leading group on one of the longest gravel sections. The Slovenian leaves the competition behind and triumphs 215 kilometers in Tuscany, 2:44 minutes ahead of the Latvian Toms Skujins. Belgian Maxim van Gils came third, ahead of last year’s British winner Tom Pidcock.

Periodic rain has made the race, which was extended this year by 30 kilometers and has a height difference of 3,700 meters, even more difficult. One of those suffering is former world champion Julian Alaphilippe. The Soudal rider who won in 2019 drops out after a crash.

Chabbey triumphs

The Swiss are not leading the way. Sébastien Reichenbach is in 55th place, more than 16 minutes behind, Marc Hirschi is in 13 places.

In the women’s race over 137 kilometers, Elise Chabbey came 8th. The Belgian Lotte Kopecky took the victory ahead of the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini and the Dutch Demi Vollering. (SDA/mab)
