Jaromir Jagr is a cult. The Czech is still revered today, especially in Pittsburgh, where he began his long and successful NHL career in 1990. In 1991 and 1992, Jagr won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins, for whom he stormed the first eleven of his 24 NHL seasons. With 1,921 points (766 goals, 1,155 assists) in 1,733 games, Jagr is the second-best scorer in NHL history, behind Wayne Gretzky.
In honor, the Penguins will retire Jagr’s jersey number 68 under the roof of the venue during a ceremony on Sunday. When they arrive, all of the Pittsburgh players are wearing his jersey and some also wear wigs to resemble him. Naturally, Jagr will not miss the opportunity to take to the ice again in full gear for this honor at the age of 52. After all, he is still playing for his home club Kladno this season.
When Jagr took his place in the stands, it was superstar Sydney Crosby who opened the scoring after 19 minutes. It looked like a home win for a long time before Swede Adrian Kempe spoiled the Penguins’ perfect evening with two late goals for the Los Angeles Kings. The 2-1 win is the fifth win in the last six games for Kevin Fiala’s team, further consolidating their play-off spot in the West.
Moser loses for the ninth time in a row
However, another disappointment follows for Janis Moser with the Arizona Coyotes. Despite being ahead twice, Biel’s defender and his team lost 3:4 to the Colorado Avalanche. For Arizona it is the ninth loss in a row.
In the second outdoor game in New Jersey within 24 hours, the New York Rangers celebrated a spectacular victory in the city game against the Islanders. Rangers now trail 4-1 before Artemi Panarin completes a furious comeback with a 6-5 extra-time win. (SDA)
