Striker Mike Glemser and his girlfriend Lara Lindmayer have had the most brutal and difficult year of their lives: On February 3, 2023, the player hit his head against the boards after a check in his Rosenheim Starbulls league match against SC Riessersee. The shocking diagnosis: fracture of the 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae. Since then, Glemser has been paralyzed from the neck down and dependent on help for everything.
Before the horror accident, the 26-year-old and Lindmayer, who is one year younger, had only been a couple for a few months. But she supports him unconditionally, and he is eternally grateful for that. “I can hardly put it into words,” he said recently in “Sport Bild”. The couple has been living together since autumn 2023 in a barrier-free apartment in Pforzheim, near the rehabilitation clinic. Glemser reports progress; he can now move his shoulders, biceps and wrist again.
Between the daily efforts and the mental challenges with setbacks and small glimmers of hope, Glemser experiences a moment of goosebumps. On Friday he attended the DEL2 match of his club Rosenheim. His girlfriend takes him onto the ice in a wheelchair and before the first confrontation he addresses moving words to the fans. “I wanted to thank you for the year in which you have given me great support,” Glemser says into the microphone. The applause brings him to tears. “And I hope the Starbulls get three points.” His wish comes true. The Rosenheimers beat the Eisbären Regensburg 1-0.
Following the accident, the club set up a donation account for the ex-player to support Glemser with the costs of treatment and future care. Within a short time the equivalent of 660,000 francs was raised.
