“Forget everything!”: Biathletes under pressure after the debacle at the start

The Swiss have clearly had to admit defeat so far – here Amy Baserga.

Amy Baserga (23) doesn’t even try to soften things up. There were two ‘shitty races’, says the woman from Schwyz in a TV interview with SRF. She knows: Swiss performance at the Biathlon World Championships in Nove Mesto (Tsch) has left much to be desired so far. 54th place in the sprint and the same ranking in the pursuit – Baserga fell far short of her expectations. Just like sports director Lena Häcki-Gross (28), who finished 66th in the sprint and did not even make it through the chase.

After the promising start to the World Cup with a fourth place in the mixed relay, the start of the individual competition turned out to be a true Swiss debacle. The men’s team also did not get up to speed at all, except for Niklas Hartweg (twice 23, 22), who is also far from being at his best.

The great Swiss form check for the Biathlon World Championships

Under difficult circumstances in the Czech Republic, the Swiss ski team now faces an uneasy day on Monday. Performance, weather, wind and especially the equipment must be carefully analyzed to be competitive for the second week of the World Cup.

Despite everything, the chances of exploitation among individuals (women on Tuesday, men on Wednesday) are still intact. Apart from the completely failed sprint, Häcki-Gross is actually in better shape than ever in her career. And Hartweg and Sebastian Stalder (26, 50./42.) can also be expected to make exclamation points. Just like Baserga, whose words about her own World Cup performances fit the entire team: “Forget everything that was! A reset is extremely important now.” (mpe)
