This is what the 2024 Olympic Games medals look like.

All medals from the Paris Summer Olympics and Paralympics will be decorated with an original piece of the Eiffel Tower. Organizers announced Thursday that each of the 5,084 plaques in gold, silver and bronze will contain at its center a hexagonal piece of iron that was once part of the symbol of the French capital.

“We wanted to give all the medal winners a piece of the Eiffel Tower from 1889,” said Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris Games’ organization. The medals are “a combination of the most precious metals gold, silver and bronze and the most precious metal of our country, the Eiffel Tower.”

Sunbeams and mainland France

The iron comes from a warehouse in Paris where the operator stores the remaining pieces of the 330-meter-high tower. These have been removed during maintenance over the years. “There were more than enough,” said Thierry Reboul, responsible for the ceremonies at the Olympic Games.

The medals were designed by jewelry and watch designer Chaumet. The medals have several grooves intended to catch the light and resemble the sun’s rays. The shape of the iron hexagon symbolizes mainland France.

The Olympic Games take place from July 26 to August 11 and the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8. (AFP)
