Authorities seized nearly 6,700 packages of illegally imported medicines at the border last year. According to the Swiss Medicines Institute Swissmedic, one in seven shipments contained erection enhancers. In second place: sleeping pills and sedatives, followed by hormone preparations, nasal sprays and laxatives. Nearly half of illegal imports come from India.
Swissmedic warns of health risks, especially when ordering online. These ‘medicines’ imported from abroad often contain no active ingredients or incorrectly stated active ingredients. Not only are you endangering your health, but you are also supporting criminal networks. In addition, the safe use of prescription medicines requires personal specialist advice in advance.
Medicines are destroyed
According to Swissmedic, the shipping and production countries of the illegal products are constantly changing.
The simplified procedure was used for 90 percent of the seized illegal pharmaceutical shipments: it allows Swissmedic and the BAZG to withdraw from circulation and destroy certain preparations and active ingredients, in particular illegal erection enhancers, slimming agents and psychotropic drugs, in order to protect the health of those that they ordered.
The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security conducted nine criminal proceedings and submitted 263 reports to the cantonal authorities regarding the illegal import of drugs containing narcotics. (SDA/lha)
