In the summer of 2015, FC Basel put 800,000 francs on the table for Manuel Akanji (28), with which defender FC Winterthur made a record transfer. The current Man City star has since collected a total of ten titles and last week he lost the title of most expensive Winti professional.
This is now called Samuel Ballet (22). The winger now plays for Serie B club Como and individual Italian media are reporting a transfer fee of 1.8 million francs. This means that ballet costs about two and a half times as much as Akanji did at the time.
No million dollar purchases
So a historical windfall for Winterthur? Sports director Oliver Kaiser (44) contradicts this: “We depend on such income to continue to grow as a club.” He would not comment on specific figures. “But there is certainly not as much money flowing into the club’s coffers as appears from the external picture,” says Kaiser.
For the FCW sports director, there is one key reason why Winterthur can suddenly sell players for millions of dollars: “For the past 40 years we have played in the Challenge League and sold players at Challenge League prices. We have been in the Super League for a year and a half now.”
So the question arises: After the departure of the first million, will the first influx of millions come to the Schützenwiese soon? Kaiser immediately waves him away. “If it does happen, it will take years,” said Winti’s sports director.
Eight scorer points are missing from Ballet
Kaiser will find it all the more difficult in the next two weeks to find a cheap and adequate replacement for Rekordtransfer Ballet. In the current season, the former YB junior scored five goals and prepared three more in 17 games.
This puts the winger in third place in the Winterthur scorers list behind FCB loanee Sayfallah Ltaief (6/4) and playmaker Matteo die Giusto (6/3). The latter could take the title of record transfer back from the Ballet next summer. His contract with FCW runs until June 2026.
