A report shows that 18.6 million expired vaccine doses had to be thrown away.

After all, the federal government’s vaccination strategy during the Covid-19 pandemic has proven itself. The Audit Committee of the National Council (GPK-N) draws a positive general conclusion in its annual report published on Tuesday. Switzerland has always managed to provide its population with the best vaccines available on the market.

The Federal Council has always given more weight to access to sufficient vaccine doses than to the risk of ending up with too many vaccines. The state government has explained this transparently and from the GPK-N’s point of view this was appropriate.

Extra vaccine doses will have to be thrown away

The extensive destruction of vaccines is an “inevitable consequence” of this strategy. According to the GPK-N, it can be assumed that after the 18.6 million expired doses, even more vaccine doses will have to be thrown away.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign and at the end of July 2023, 17 million doses of vaccine have been injected. The Covid-19 vaccination campaign launched last autumn targeted particularly vulnerable people. The federal campaign targeted people over 65 and people with previous illnesses.

No resale of vaccination doses

The federal government has so far donated almost 8 million vaccine doses as part of the international Covax program. There was no resale of vaccine doses to other countries. From GPK-N’s point of view, this is understandable given the low international demand.

According to the GPK-N, the federal government has not ordered any vaccines since the beginning of 2023. Where possible, the federal government has reduced deliveries of cans already ordered. By the middle of this year, the federal government will withdraw from procurement and return to standard operating procedures, the report said. (SDA/oco)
