Russian figure skater Kamila Valiyeva has been banned for four years by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), almost two years after the doping scandal at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The start of the suspension has been pushed back to December 25, 2021, the day of the positive doping test at the Russian Championships, and all results achieved since then will be cancelled. This also includes team gold at the 2022 Games.
As the CAS announced on Monday after the ruling, Valiyeva, 17, will be stripped of all “titles, awards, medals, prizes and entry fees” she has collected since then. At the 2022 Winter Games, she and the team won over the US and Japan. However, the positive test for the banned drug trimetazidine came to light while he was still in Beijing, and the team competition medals have not yet been awarded.
The case ended up at CAS of the World Anti-Doping Agency because the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (Rusada) had not yet made a decision. (AFP/SDA)
