Meschack Elia (r.) is in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup with Congo.

After beating record champion Egypt, Congo is in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup. The Central Africans won the penalty shootout on Sunday evening with 8:7.

After regular playing time the score is 1:1. YB striker Meschack Elia (26) put the Congolese ahead with a header in the 37th minute, and Mostafa Mohamed equalized for Egypt with a penalty in the first half. From the 97th minute onwards, the North Africans only played with ten men after a yellow-red card against Mohamed Hamdi. Elia is substituted during extra time and therefore does not take part in the penalty shootout.

Now it’s against YB colleagues

The fact that there is an expansion is not necessarily illogical. Both teams played a draw in all matches of the group stage. Since the second group match, the North Africans have also had to do without superstar Mohamed Salah, who had to leave early with an injury.

In the quarter-finals, Congo will face Guinea and it will be a clash between Elia and clubmate Mohamed Ali Camara (26). Guinea defeated Equatorial Guinea 1-0 on Sunday, although Camara did not play.

In the other already known quarter-final, Angola faces Nigeria with Promotion League goalkeeper Signori Antonio (Etoile Carouge). The remaining round of 16 matches will take place on Monday and Tuesday. (SDA/che)
