The first thing to clarify is an important question: how do you actually pronounce her name correctly, Dzenifera Germane (20)? The Latvian has to laugh. “Jennifer Gärmane,” she tells Blick. And immediately adds: “Everyone calls me Jenny – that’s easier.” One thing is certain: you should remember her name no matter what, after all, Germane is nothing less than the skiing phenomenon from Latvia.

Germane comes from the small Baltic state with only 1.85 million inhabitants. The highest point in the country is Gaizinkalns (311.5 meters above sea level) – more of a hill than a mountain. All the more surprising is the fact that Germane is already driving a car at the age of 20. Her slalom results this winter: 22, 12, 8, 8. With a total of only five World Cup competitions, this is an extremely strong record that even top skier Mikaela Shiffrin (28, USA) could not boast of at the beginning of her career.

“My New Year’s resolution was to get into the top 10 this winter. I’m also surprised that it works so well.” With her results, Germane is the most successful female skier in the history of Latvia – no man has achieved more. That’s why she’s already seen as a hero.

As a child she sang during races

Germane’s mother, Ulla, once competed in ski races herself – for the Soviet Union. “She didn’t want my brother and I to become ski racers. But my father taught us. And now there are more,” she says. When Germane was eight years old, the family moved to Austria. «I have also done children’s races in Switzerland, for example in Samnaun. I was told that I sang a lot during the competitions, so I enjoyed skiing from the start.”

Germane impresses with his calm driving style. Her upper body always remains stable – so at first glance she doesn’t seem particularly fast. But that is deceptive. “It makes me proud to represent Latvia. But above all, I like that I can make my parents happy. After all, you sacrificed a lot for me.” It is quite possible that it will continue to bring them great joy.
