GC goes Hollywood! With Will Ferrell, one of the most famous Ulknudeln in the world has joined the Hoppers. Eldin Jakupovic (39), former Los Angeles FC goalkeeper, met the 56-year-old in person. “He often trained with us, I spoke to him a few times,” said the man from Bilten GL. Comedian colleague Owen Wilson (55) also came by every now and then and had lunch with the team.
Superstars such as Leonardo DiCaprio (49) and Snoop Dogg (52) were in the stands at home games. Plus, NBA and NFL stars are at virtually every LAFC game. “I got to know countless personalities,” says Jakupovic.
GC is bigger than LAFC
A year ago in the winter, the Everton FC goalkeeper moved to California. And he is amazed at how far the club, which was only founded in 2014, has already come. “A lot has been invested in a very short time. This is a really well run club. Among other things, they built a nice, small practice room.” Compared to the GC campus in Niederhasli, the project is still in its infancy. “LAFC can still learn a lot from the standings,” said the 39-year-old. Especially when it comes to infrastructure.
LAFC simply has a main place to train. “It is reserved for the first team. To get to the other places, you first have to cross a main street. There are two or three worse places there, where the second team and the varsity team train.”
The stadium, on the other hand, is a real gem. 22,000 places. Almost always sold out. “The atmosphere is sensational, the fans are singing along, they are dancing. It is pure entertainment,” says Jakupovic. Individual scenes, including violations, are shown on the big screen. But the goalkeeper knows nothing about a halftime show: “Because I was always in the dressing room during halftime.” At least there are no cheerleaders. “That’s more of an issue in the NBA and the NFL.”
Don’t rule out a GC return
He is currently without a club, lives with his family in Tennessee, plays indoor football, trains individually with a goalkeeper coach, says he is in top form, wants to know again, is waiting to see if another offer comes.
The ex-hopper also does not rule out a return to the rankings, perhaps as a goalkeeper coach who works with young players: “For me, the rankings are still the best club in Switzerland. The story and all the titles speak for themselves.”
In this regard, LAFC can still learn from the Grasshoppers.
