Michael Lang (32), FC Basel

In the spring of 2023, the 31-time international surprisingly extended his contract by two years, at the initiative of ex-coach and sports director Heiko Vogel (48). Only to find out in the summer, after Mo Dräger (27) and Kevin Rüegg (25) had been signed, that there was no longer any demand for his services at Red-Blauw. A lightning bolt to the rankings fell apart, which further damaged his shares: after the dismissal of Timo Schultz (46), he also had to endure the four-match interlude under Vogel and since then also under Fabio Celestini (48). Lang can only show what he can do at another club in the second half of the season. It’s entirely possible that after the change in ownership he became more interested in returning to GC.

Yusuf Demir (20), FC Basel

His best performance came during his debut against FCZ (2:2). Since then, expectations and reality have been far apart for the former prodigy Ösi, who played for Barcelona in the Champions League. The next half of the year will likely have a decisive influence on the direction his career will take. The question is whether he will actually complete the second half of the season at FCB.

Kevin Spadanuda (27), FC Lucerne

Anyone who switches from Ligue 1 (Ajaccio) to the Super League automatically creates high expectations: but ex-Aarau top scorer Kevin Spadanuda has not been able to live up to them in Lucerne so far. Initially his performance was unsatisfactory, but a foot injury held him back. Whether he flourishes in Central Switzerland also depends on whether coach Mario Frick (49) trusts the sensitive attacking all-rounder.

Mirlind Kryeziu (26), FC Zurich

Coach Bo Henriksen (48) does not have a high opinion of the defensive giants – in the preliminary round, the homegrown FCZ team only played once in the competition. Henriksen has no reason to make any changes to his defense. As a reminder, Kryeziu was one of the pillars of the 2022 championship title. Given his current status, that’s hard to believe.

Bradley Fink (20), rankings

The FCB tenant cannot complain about a lack of playing time. But one goal in seventeen games is not enough for someone who once had a vague hope of being selected for the 2024 European Championship. His performances in the second half of the season will determine whether he has a future at FC Basel after that.
