The transfer of Ulisses Garcia to Olympique Marseille has been completed.

YB left back Ulisses Garcia (28) has been an official player for Olympique Marseille since Tuesday. The Swiss international signed a contract until 2028 and is expected to succeed Renan Lodi (25), who is about to move to Saudi Arabia.

Garcia’s qualities are well known in this country; In the Super League he put on a spectacle for five and a half years with lots of dynamics and irresistible cross runs. The 52 scoring points he achieved during this period are an impressive testament to his attacking danger. His move to a top competition? Well deserved, according to the consensus in Bern.

But in France the deal raises questions. Not everyone understands the arrival of Geneva. In the talk show ‘After Foot’ on TV channel RMC Sport, the experts work on Garcia – and they also do not let the Super League stand in good stead.

“Is this supposed to be a joke?”

“When I first heard about the transfer I was blown away,” said Polo Breitner, a French expert on German football. “I immediately called my contacts in Switzerland to ask if this was a joke.”

Breitner is convinced that Garcia does not have the necessary level to survive in France. “All the boys leave Switzerland very early. A 28-year-old player from this league who should be good, there is no such thing.” Because he is clear that the Super League is a “second, maybe even third division” competition.

He attributes “major technical and tactical shortcomings” to Garcia. And says: “If he ever becomes a regular player at Olympique Marseille, then only if OM plays in the second division.” A devastating verdict. Breitner ends his tirade with another swipe: “This is a big surprise for me – but not in a good way.”

As soon as he arrived, a strong headwind hit Garcia in the face. Now it’s up to him to prove the experts wrong. (sbe)
