At the end of December, Toni Polster (59) kept his country in suspense. The Austrian football legend suffered a perforated stomach. The ex-attacker’s life was hanging by a thread. Without emergency surgery, he would not have survived more than one night, Polster now tells “Today” a few days after he was released from the hospital.
He still remembers that day well when the doctors described the shock diagnosis to him. In the morning he broke out in a sweat and his face was pale. Nevertheless, he had a normal breakfast and then went to a press conference.
The first symptoms were ignored
But when severe pain suddenly occurred, he took the route to the hospital at the insistence of his wife Brigitte. “Then the operation was performed immediately. I was shocked when the doctors told me: you have a perforated stomach,” says Polster. The ex-Cologne star woke up in intensive care.
Looking back, however, the first symptoms were noticeable a few days in advance. At the time, he incorrectly attributed a pulling pain in his stomach to his corona illness.
Now Polster has decided to change his lifestyle, eat healthier and spend as much time as possible with his grandchildren.
Toni Polster played 95 times for the Austrian national team in his career (44 goals). With Austria Vienna he became champion three times. He also played in the Bundesliga (Cologne and Gladbach) and in Spain (Sevilla, Rayo Vallecano). (Gentlemen)
