Did Franz Beckenbauer (†78) see his death coming? At least he had an inkling that he would face difficult years in terms of his health, as Beckenbauer’s long-time manager and friend Marcus Höfl revealed in the ARD documentary “Beckenbauer – Legend of German Football”, which aired on Monday evening.
Höfl begins his description by saying that he no longer knows exactly whether it was 2010 or 2011. “We were having dinner on the plane and he said to me that he had always been a fan of detailed long-term horoscopes: ‘You, we have ten very difficult years ahead of us. It’s going to be very difficult for me, financially, but also health-wise and so on.’ Then I said, ‘You’re crazy.'”
Höfl recalls in the documentary that Beckenbauer was still doing very well at the time: “He was more than fit for his age and when you look back and see what happened, it is in a way a tragic memory. Because unfortunately he was right about that.”
In the last few years before his death, Franz Beckenbauer had largely withdrawn from the public eye and suffered several health problems before falling asleep surrounded by his family last Sunday. (dti)
