Professional footballer Dapo Mebude (22) was scheduled to play a test match with the Belgian second division club KV Oostende in the lower division of Knokke on Sunday afternoon. But the 22-year-old was not allowed to play on the field. Instead, the Scot is now in mortal danger.
Mebude was driving his car to the test match on Sunday morning when he left the road and crashed into a tree. The striker was later taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he immediately underwent emergency surgery.
Critical condition after surgery
“Tomorrow we will receive more details about his situation,” his club wrote on X on Sunday evening. At the same time, they thanked the medical staff for the player’s care. His thoughts are now with his family. Mebude is still in critical condition.
According to Belgian television channel GVA, no other vehicle was involved in the accident. The responsible public prosecutor’s office has started the investigation.
Mebude started his young career with Glasgow Rangers. He made his debut there at the age of 17 under English legend Steven Gerrard (43). Mebude is now under contract with Watford FC’s U21 team. In the summer he moved on loan to KV Oostende, where he has played two games so far. (Gentlemen)
