Bologna is on the rise. Partly thanks to a Swiss trio: Michel Aebischer (26), Remo Freuler (31) and Dan Ndoye (23) are all part of the permanent staff. And they play a huge part in Bologna currently sitting 4th in Serie A – and thus qualifying for the Champions League. Winger Ndoye in particular, who came from Basel for nine million euros this summer, has been in the news lately. He sent Inter Milan out of the Coppa Italia with a beautiful goal and sank AS Roma with a clever assist.
Ndoye explains the Bologna phenomenon
The Italian press fell in love with the lightning-fast Vaudois. After the match against Rome (2-0), the “Gazzetta dello Sport” wrote about him: “A tornado, a devil, a knife.” Ndoye and Bologna are currently at the premier class level, according to the trade magazine. But the Swiss international puts things in perspective. “We are only at the beginning of the championship. If we are four or five matchdays before the end or very close, then we can talk about Europe in concrete terms.
According to him, Bologna did not steal anything: “The placement is deserved because we wanted to actively play with the ball from the start and implement our philosophy. We have all worked a lot, our identity is now visible,” says Ndoye.
Coach Thiago Motta played a major role in this. But it was “not easy” to get to know the former Inter star’s game idea. ‘Are you a wing? Then you are not just a wing in his eyes. Depending on your position, you have very different tasks in the game. He doesn’t lock anyone into his traditional position.” Motta is also a perfectionist, Ndoye explains: “He talks a lot, he explains a lot, he wants everything to be perfect.”
He will miss the start of the new year
Ndoye’s adjustment period in Emilia-Romagna went smoothly. In his spare time he enjoys supporting the local basketball team, which competes on the international stage of the Euroleague during the week. «I watch Virtus Bologna in the Euroleague whenever I can. But I hope I will be busy during the week next year,” he says mischievously, referring to a possible European Cup qualification with his team.
His teammates will have to pursue this goal in the coming games without Rocket Ndoye. In the last championship match against Atalanta (1-0), the fourth victory in suite, the Swiss had to be replaced before half-time due to injuries. Now the diagnosis has arrived – and it is unpleasant: Ndoye has torn a muscle fiber and will be out for about six weeks. Bitter. Also for Bologna’s Champions League ambitions.
