Former cross-country skier Dario Cologna (37) is not the only winter Olympic champion enjoying daddy happiness on Christmas Day: Italian ski topper Giuliano Razzoli is becoming a father for the first time.
The slalom specialist, who celebrated his 39th birthday a week ago, shares the good news on Instagram: “Merry Christmas, I wish everyone a day full of affection and happiness. There is very special news for us.” He holds his pregnant wife Elisa, with whom he has been married since the summer of 2022, in his arms.
Olympic gold as the highlight of his career
Razzoli can look back on a long career full of highlights. The biggest: Olympic gold in Vancouver 2010. In bad weather conditions (rain and fog) he took 16 hundredths of a second over the then high-flyer Ivica Kostelic (44) and somewhat surprisingly crowned himself the winner after Piero Gros (1976) and Alberto Tomba (1988), third Olympic slalom champion from Italy.
Almost two months earlier, Razzoli had won his first of two World Cup victories in Zagreb (Kro). The second followed a year later in Lenzerheide GR. In the two slaloms of the current season, Razzoli did not go as planned. In Gurgl (Austria) he was eliminated in the first run, in Madonna di Campiglio (It) before Christmas his time was not enough for the second run.
It is very possible that the slalom veteran will end his career after this winter. With the impending addition to the family, at least one new task awaited him.
