Julie Zogg laughs. «My highlight of 2023? I absolutely cannot decide.” Understandable, because last year was a wonderful year for the 31-year-old alpine snowboarder.
The St. Gallen native became the 2023 parallel slalom world champion, won both the small and large crystal balls and married her boyfriend Christoph. “Everything came together. It was the perfect snowboarding season. And the fact that I was able to marry my husband afterwards was the icing on the cake.”
“It was clear to me: that was it.”
But it was not a given that Zogg would be crowned world champion for the second time after 2019. Two days before her title, she fell heavily during the parallel giant slalom and had to be taken away by rescue sled. “At that moment it was clear to me that this was it. I couldn’t even walk anymore. But when they said at the hospital that I only had bruises and strains, I got a little hope again.”
In retrospect, the accident turned out to be almost a stroke of luck. «When I drove into the morning of the slalom race and realized that it was possible with painkillers, I was incredibly happy. At that moment I didn’t even think about the World Cup anymore, I just enjoyed snowboarding. That’s why I was able to start without any pressure and start completely freely.”
