Unfortunately, it’s becoming increasingly common for streaming services to remove portions of their exclusive original content from their platforms to save on running costs for titles that are (still) only viewed by a few people.
The fans of ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ had to swallow a particularly bitter pill in this regard. After the animated series successfully opened the legendary science fiction franchise to a younger audience, while also attracting experienced Trekkies (especially with the comeback of Voyager Captain Janeway), a second season was quickly decided.
Production had already progressed accordingly Paramount+ then surprisingly withdrew the renewal in June 2023 and the series was even completely removed from the platform for the reasons mentioned above. And that despite the fact that this is actually THE number 1 “Star Trek” point of contact with all films and almost all series from the universe.
So that all the work is not in vain and fans experience even more “Prodigy” adventures, However, producing CBS Studios soon began looking for a new streaming home – and eventually found it in Netflixwhere “Star Trek: Discovery” celebrated its international premiere some time ago.
Before Netflix in 2024 second season of “Star Trek: Prodigy” launches, the provider is adding the first season to its portfolio today, December 25, 2023. This should also make the series known to a larger audience in this country, as it can only be seen in Germany on Super RTL. It is not yet known whether season 2 will also find its way to free television.
This is what “Star Trek: Prodigy” is all about
In the year 2383, a group of outlaw youths find an abandoned Starfleet starship in the vastness of the Delta Quadrant. They curiously inspect their discovery and soon embark on the greatest adventure of their lives. The ship is the lost USS Protostar – and on board they find an old hologram of Captain Kathryn Janeway (voiced in English by original actress Kate Mulgrew and in German by her signature voice Gertie Honeck).
From now on, Janeway acts as a mentor for the young adventurers and together the motley crew of outsiders embarks on a journey into the infinite depths of space. Differences must be overcome and challenges must be overcome so that the group can grow together as a team.
