Last Friday, leader Philipp Muntwiler (36) ended his career at youth club Wil after 18 years in professional football. “Munti” made almost 600 missions for St. Gall, Lucerne, Vaduz and Wil. It’s about time, says Muntwiler and takes us on a journey through time to the beginning of his unique career. No other professional has suddenly appeared in the news as much as he has through no fault of his own.

Mastermaker Munti

On April 1, 2007, the then 20-year-old Muntwiler came on as a substitute for FC St. Gallen against FC Zürich with fifteen minutes to go. Because he had been sent off the day before in an U21 match, he would not have been eligible to play. FC Zurich got wind of this after the 0-0 draw, protested and won the match at the green table. At the end of the season, FCZ becomes Swiss champion, ahead of FCB. Muntwiler is indirectly the master maker – and from that moment on he is known to everyone in the country.

The former St. Gallen resident recalls: “I always hoped that this action would not be decisive. But after the last match it quickly became clear that it was still the case. In the beginning it was difficult for me, but over time it was good for my personal development. In Basel I was of course booed, but the FCZ fans cheered me when I was substituted in a friendly match. That was a nice action.”

The big misunderstanding

After seven years, Muntwiler, who as an exemplary professional always maintained a good relationship with his bosses, moved from St. Gallen as a beacon of hope to Lucerne, where he left for Vaduz after a season with little playing time and disagreements with coach Bernegger. . «I just didn’t fit Carlos Bernegger as a person and as a player, that happens every now and then in life. We are two impulsive people who met. There were many destructive discussions where things got loud. That was the station that had the most negative impact on me. In retrospect, the change was my biggest mistake, but you also learn from it.”

There was beer in it

Muntwiler did not win a major title in Switzerland (Cup/Champions), but did win the cup six times with FC Vaduz (2014 to 2019). He made progress in his career, not only on the field, but also while celebrating. “I was one of the first to open a can after a win and was also out and about on the track. I lived for football and the team and got involved in every match. But you subordinate so much to sports, so it’s important to be able to express your emotions elsewhere. You can’t make up the time between 20 and 30. But of course: first and foremost, the performance on the field must be right.”

He never lived in the subjunctive

18 years of professional football. Apart from Liechtenstein, Muntwiler never worked abroad despite interest, but played for St. Gallen, Lucerne, Vaduz and youth club Wil. The 36-year-old is not the type to mourn things from the past. “What if? Thinking like that doesn’t help. I think everything is going as it should. I am happy with how my career as a player was and I hope I will learn a lot more in my new role as assistant coach at FC Wil. “

The Yellow King

The leader collected 166 yellow cards in the two top Swiss leagues – a record. «In the beginning I was young and stubborn. Once you have this reputation, you will receive a warning more quickly. I was the type of player who always wanted to get the most out of it, but could still control myself well. And as long as there are no red cards (two in his career, ed.)…’ Muntwiler laughs.
