Winterthur City Council: Runway extensions at Zurich Airport rejected

The canton of Zurich will vote on the extension of the airport’s runways on March 3, 2024. The voting campaign is likely to be intense. Opinions vary widely.

With extended runways, the eastern concept will allow 70 instead of 66 take-offs and landings per hour in the future. The eastern concept will also be applied in the noise-sensitive evening and night hours, the municipal council writes. Not all planes took off or landed regularly at 11 p.m.

According to the city council, the delays, which could be resolved by 11:30 p.m., are not primarily caused by the runways in Zurich being too short, but because planes around the world are delayed all day.

The airport and the Zurich government council see this differently. They believe that longer runways improve punctuality and therefore cause less noise in the evenings. In addition, operating the airport with extended runways is considerably safer.

The city of Winterthur also announced on Thursday that it would participate in the No campaign together with other organizations. The city of Winterthur is chairman of the East Authority Organization, which represents 122 municipalities in the cantons of Zurich, Thurgau, St. Gallen and Appenzell AR with approximately 740,000 inhabitants.

The airport wants to extend runway 28 by 400 meters to the west and runway 32 by 280 meters to the north. The Zurich Government Council and the Canton Council support the expansion. (SDA)
