Reto Suri (34) cheered exuberantly on the EVZ bench – in an elegant jacket. The player, who was still recovering from his knee injury, was on the board for the 6-2 win over Zug in Bern in the last game before the Nati break: “It was a huge match, I could just give everyone a pat on the back.”
The reason for Suri’s role change? Two days earlier, the club said goodbye to assistant coach Lars Johansson (53, Sd). Master maker Dan Tangnes (44) did not want to rush into hiring a new assistant, so the Norwegian came up with the idea of giving his striker his first insight into the coaching profession. “For Reto it is a great opportunity to get a taste of something. Of course he only sees the tip of the iceberg,” says Tangnes. Such as match preparation and analysis or the process within the technical staff before talking to the players.
EVZ is looking for a new assistant coach
However, the 44-year-old emphasizes that Suri will only be in the EVZ team temporarily – i.e. for the three games until the Christmas holidays. He does this so explicitly because he has been asked several times that Suri is a good solution and is of course welcomed by his followers. Tangnes understands these reactions because there is a certain similarity with the career of ex-EVZ striker Josh Holden (45, Ka/Sz). The current HCD head coach also stepped straight from the ice to the boards in 2018. “We are looking for a new assistant coach, it will not be Reto,” said Tangnes. Not yet.
Because Suri can certainly imagine himself pursuing a coaching career after his playing career. The 34-year-old started several years ago with the corresponding courses, which are easier for experienced NL players. According to Tangnes, this temporary foray into the EVZ gang should be an inspiration for Suri, as the coach testifies that the player has the skills to do so. “I am grateful to him for that,” says Suri. “And the fact that he sees something in me motivates me.” But he’s a total rookie.
Suri’s communication skills and social skills are undisputed. “As a player I also like to light a fire on the bench.” But he still lacks the distance when switching roles. «Being able to control your emotions is always a problem for me, even as a player. As a coach it is even more important.” When he once talked to Holden about it, he couldn’t quite put his finger on it: “Now I can do it.” And the goal celebration? “I just felt like a player without any equipment,” he describes.
Therefore, the goal of the 2013 silver hero is still a return to the ice. He is working hard for the comeback. His motivation for this is also the acceptance of his team: Suri travels to away games. “This closeness – and the fact that I am seen as a full team member – is not self-evident,” he knows. “That means a lot to me.” He has been training alone on the ice for three weeks and his knee is doing the same. The goal is to arrive in early February. Suri’s great wish is to be able to end his career on the ice.
