There is always a other side of the coin. The thing about YB’s success is that a large squad automatically generates dissatisfaction. Even if a coach rotates diligently, he cannot please everyone. Because every football player has an innate reflex: he wants to play as often as possible. Preferably always. If that is not the case, dissatisfaction quickly arises.
Amanda plays exactly half the games
Aurèle Amenda (20) was the whiz kid at YB last season. He started in 10 of the 20 games in the final second half of the season. But above all: he was in the starting line-up for the last six games.
This season the picture seems no different: of the 18 championship games, he starts 9. Fifty-fifty also in the Champions League: 6 games, of which 3 start from eleven games. Only: in the really important matches, coach Raphael Wicky (46) prefers Amenda Loris Benito (31). This was the case in the two Champions League play-off matches against Maccabi Haifa. In the two games against Red Star Belgrade, which were finals. And in the two championship games against the then leader FC Zürich.
Didn’t go as hoped
The bottom line is that Amenda is angry: “I want more work time. Especially after the six good months I had in the last second half of the season. There are also the matches at the U21 Euro. All this led to offers from abroad. But I decided to stay and now things didn’t go as hoped. That’s why I’m a little disappointed. Let’s see how the rest of the season goes.”
Offers from abroad? And how! One or the other would have been quite specific. Among the applicants: at least one Premier League club. And the offers were good. They went up to 12, 15 million francs! Will this capital be partially destroyed because Amenda plays too rarely? He doesn’t believe that himself: “My market value will certainly not drop that quickly. I showed my potential, also in the Champions League.”
Confident but grounded
The statements are confident. But the young man is certainly considered grounded. Given these amounts, there is certainly a risk of withdrawal. “It doesn’t make my head turn, don’t worry,” says the central defender. ‘I know how to keep my feet on the ground. “It means I have to keep working so I can show that I am worth this money.”
Sports director Steve von Bergen (40) confirms that there have been several bids, but he obviously makes no statements about the amount of the bids. “Aurèle had the option to leave, but we decided together that it was best for his career if he stayed with us.” This also means that he will have competition at YB from Benito, Ali Camara and Fabian Lustenberger. “This is a very good learning process for him. “You have to remember that he has only been a professional for almost two years.”
Competition, okay. But what if the coach has other plans? What about the destruction of capital? “No,” says Von Bergen. “We have a clear plan with the player and his agent. Often we can complete this process with one player. Sometimes it doesn’t work because opinions differ. But I don’t want to say more about it.”
Amenda is in the RS
The last thing that made it even more difficult was that Amenda was in the (top athlete) RS. “That is also important for him,” says Von Bergen. “He has grown up and become a man.” However, the man from Neuchâtel has a caveat: “He hasn’t had the real RS he should be. He is with us the day before a match and the day after. If you only have English weeks, he might be in Magglingen two days a week. But I am one hundred percent sure: the RS offers something for everyone.”
Amenda is also positive about it: “I really like it. I also did a lot of physical training there. I can even benefit from that.” Frustrated, yes, but still positive. That’s just Amenda.
