You can’t even imagine what could have happened. An iron bar, a throw, a group of FCB players – fortunately it remains in the subjunctive mood.

Wednesday evening, crime scene at Cornaredo Stadium in Lugano. It is the 29th minute in the catch-up game between the team from Ticino and Basel: Jonathan Dubasin scores with a header to make it 1-0 for the guests (final score 3-1 for Basel). The goal is scored right in front of the standing block of home fans. And a few meters before that, the Basel team celebrated their sixth 1-0 lead in their sixth match under Fabio Celestini.

Apparently too much for the angry Tifosi. The unthinkable happens: suddenly an iron bar (!) flies onto the field in the direction of the Basel cheering grape. And just barely misses it. Several eyewitnesses confirm that the projectile came from the Ticino fan block.

Basel players became very scared

Blick knows: the Basel players who witnessed the attack were extremely scared. This is also evident from the photo that FCB veteran Taulant Xhaka posted on Instagram. A Basel player can be seen picking up the iron bar, while Xhaka appears to try to calm the Lugano fans with his gesture and his teammates look at the projectile in disbelief.

When FCB left back Dominik Schmid then drew referee Alessandro Dudic’s attention to the iron bar, he instructed it to be put aside, according to information from Blick.

When asked by Blick, FCB said: “We are aware of the incident and are pleased that no one was hit or injured during the action.”

How could it come to this?

It’s still a shock – thankfully! The sneak attack will still have consequences. The incident is likely recorded in the security delegate’s report and will now go to the responsible disciplinary body of the Swiss Football League. It will take some time before a sentence is announced.

But how did the scandal happen in the first place? When asked by Blick, FC Lugano also confirmed that it was aware of the incident. Research has shown that the iron bar was part of the choreography with which the Lugano supporters honored the new record player Jonathan Sabbatini before the start of the match. The Uruguayan replaced the previous record holder René Morf on Wednesday with his 412th league match for the team from Ticino.

According to FC Lugano, they have not yet found out which person or persons threw the pole. And how he was able to fly onto the field despite the fan curve safety net.

People in Ticino are also shocked by the throwing scandal from their own fan camp. The club said: “We strongly condemn the action and will do everything possible to identify and punish the offenders.”

The fact is: the Super League narrowly avoided disaster in Lugano on Wednesday evening and with a lot of luck.
