Phil Taylor (63) had actually already ended his career after losing the 2018 World Cup final, but now the living darts legend is finally retiring. In the meantime, he took part in several senior tournaments, including the World Cup twice.
2024 will now be the last year, the record world champion (16 titles) has announced through its supplier Target. “Time waits for no man and I know this is the right time to resign. If you stop playing the way you could, it breaks your heart.” The 85-time winner of the Major title will also no longer participate in show tournaments.
His grandson doesn’t want ‘The Power’ to stop: ‘He wants me to keep playing forever.’ But Taylor doesn’t want that: “It was a great trip. But now the time has come. I will be 65 years old in 2025.” The decision is both “physical and spiritual in nature.”
“I want to go to the jungle camp”
The Englishman, who won eight world titles in a row as a professional between 1995 and 2002, will go on a farewell tour next year. He will graduate in a year from the Senior World Championships.
And what comes next? Maybe join the British jungle camp? “Yes, I would go into the jungle,” Taylor says on “Talk Sport Breakfast”. It would be a challenge he has never had before. “I would if you asked me.” He would have time soon. (ch)
