Black Friday is the shopping day of the year. In the run-up to Christmas and just before the 13th month’s salary is credited, many people’s wallets are particularly thin. Only: This time, a peaceful stroll through the shopping streets with an espresso in the late autumn sun has nothing to do. The weather is draughty, rainy and getting colder by the hour.

Stores in city centers are also feeling this. There is no less buying. But most people order their bargains at their office desk while working. Take a trip to the mall after work. There are almost no parking spaces left after 5pm at the Glattzentrum in Wallisellen ZH. Business is booming.

The view is on the site. And see what customers are after. Christmas gifts are a big topic. Two women, real shopping professionals, open their shopping bags. Irène Känel (73) from Bassersdorf ZH: “I bought pajamas for my husband. His birthday is in January. That’s why only then he understands,” she says and laughs. Her friend Brigitte van der Meijden (65) from Wallisellen ZH makes her son happy with a cute Pischi at Christmas.

Nico Bonazzola (20) from Lachen SZ is an old-school magician. He smiles when Blick asks him about his purchases. Because he doesn’t buy jeans or trendy sneakers for himself, no, he makes crafts for the advent calendar he prepared for his girlfriend. «Pine cones, chocolates and wrapping paper. I already have the rest of the gifts.” He will be very excited. Guaranteed.

“I expected more than 20 percent”

Two friends from Ticino are preparing for the cold season. Leyla (20) took a soft pillow to the shared apartment. But he was disappointed. “I actually expected more than a 20 percent discount,” she says. Her friend Gioia (20) found a Christmas present for her brother. He is happy with his discount: “40 percent!” He does not want to disclose how much the current cost is.

Many events took place in stores on Black Friday. Bern’s Loeb says: “We have very high frequencies in the city and especially in our large stores. “There definitely seems to be a desire to buy.” A spokesman for Manor did not want to give specific sales figures but said the Dark Days and the pre-Christmas and Christmas seasons were “very important and strong in terms of sales”. And things were good.
