Not just Yakin under the microscope: these are the four Nati scenarios

A meeting fascinates Swiss football: In December, after the draw for the European Championship groups next week, SFV chairman Dominique Blanc, Nati director Pierluigi Tami and coach Murat Yakin will meet to analyze the recent European Championship qualification. A decision is then made.

Will everything stay the same? Is the association firing a coach for the first time this millennium? Should Tami also worry about his job? Is there a completely new beginning? Blick analyzes the four scenarios:

Only Yakin has to go

If you believe the words of SFV chairman Dominique Blanc, this is actually an impossible scenario. “We are going to the European Championships with Yakin,” de Romand told “CH Media”. However, that was before the last three qualifying matches, in which the national team won the European Championship ticket, but only took two points and was once again disappointing from a technical point of view. Blanc probably did not expect the sporting decline to continue; before the match against Romania, he emphasized to journalists the importance of the December analysis.

It cannot be ruled out that Nati director Pierluigi Tami, who has publicly counted Yakin out, will convince Blanc and the central board to fire Yakin. Tami is the only football expert in the SFV management; he has the right to make suggestions about the coaching question. It would also be the first time since Rolf Fringer in 1997 that a national coach would have to leave involuntarily.

In this case, Tami will probably shoot the last arrow in his quiver in the form of a new trainer. But if the national team were to sink at the European Championships, it would mean the end of Tami.

Only Tami has to go

According to Blick-Info, Tami’s support in the central board, the highest body of the association, is crumbling. The atmospheric disruptions, the inadequate handling of the crashing World Cup outing a year ago – the national team’s top operational boss is also responsible for all of this. And the fact that Tami remained true to his motto when he went to work in the difficult autumn (“I don’t want to disturb”) turned out to be a boomerang: if Tami had been “disturbed”, that is, had violently intervened in the dispute between Granit Xhaka and Yakin and the national coach in general If our backs were strengthened, there would hardly be a coaching discussion.

The irony of history: just when Tami made his first sharp statement after the 1-0 defeat in Romania, his statements really sparked the coaching discussion. The Ticino made it clear that a European Championship without Yakin was conceivable.

If the SFV remains with Yakin against Tami’s wishes, it will seriously weaken the position of the Nati director. A departure, voluntary or involuntary, would then be likely, if not mandatory.

Yakin and Tami stay

If Yakin stays, changes are still needed. The coach, who currently seems isolated, lacks a loyal confidante in the staff. It is quite possible that this ‘problem’ will solve itself soon, even if nothing has been signed yet: according to Blick information, Super League PhD candidate Lausanne-Sport wants to make Nati assistant Vincent Cavin head of sport – and Cavin, of his side , loves that job.

That would make room for a Yakin intimacy. Tami could exploit Cavin’s departure to the extent that castling at the assistant position is the conclusion of the December analysis. And with this argument you can also save yourself.

Problem: If Yakin stays, with or without Tami, the coaching discussion would only be swept away if at the same time Yakin’s contract is extended beyond the 2024 European Championship. And the coach will not go to Germany as a “lame duck”.

Yakin and Tami have to go

Practically impossible because it is a risky decision: a new coach and a new national coach would have to be found six months before the European Championship. Finding a successor for every position is difficult. Finding people for both positions who are a good match would be virtually impossible in such a short time.
