Switzerland plays 1-1 against Kosovo and qualifies for the 2024 European Championship.

Switzerland will participate in the 2024 European Championships in Germany. However, that does not mean that there is total euphoria. “It was certainly not the best qualification,” Xherdan Shaqiri (32) told SRF immediately after the disappointing 1-1 draw against Kosovo in Basel. “We made it. We can all be proud of ourselves, including the fans.”

“We would have liked to celebrate qualifying with a victory, here with the fans and family,” says 1-0 goalscorer Ruben Vargas (25). “The joy of getting the EM ticket will definitely come. After the match there was already disappointment about the result, but now the atmosphere in the dressing room was a little more relaxed.

Xhaka relieved after qualifying: “You can be proud of your qualifications – of how less you are.”(03:19)

Sixth final round in a row

“We can be happy,” says captain Granit Xhaka (31). ‘We are happy too. Being in the final for the sixth time in a row is not a given.” The last time Switzerland missed a major tournament was the European Championships in 2012.

After nine of the ten matches played, Switzerland have recorded four wins and five draws – a mixed record in this weak qualifying group. Xhaka: “The worm is in it at the moment.” The Romanians (Nati’s opponent on Tuesday) are now in first place after the 2-1 win against Israel – two points ahead of Switzerland.

Yakin’s apology

Murat Yakin (49) admits in the SRF studio that the 1-1 draw irritates him. The coach then says defiantly: “We almost have to apologize because we did not qualify for the European Championship after the sixth matchday.”

About the loud criticism of himself, Yakin says: “It hasn’t been about sports for a long time. I think this is a personal reckoning among some media people who probably feel like there’s something wrong between me and Granit. That is absolutely not true. We have a great exchange with each other.” (Yes)
