With Miedema on the bench, Arsenal take on Champions League winners Lyon

Vivianne Miedema’s Arsenal started the Champions League group stage with a 5-1 win over holders Olympique Lyon. Juventus, Bayern Munich and Barcelona also won.

Orange international Miedema made it 5-1 for Arsenal with ten minutes remaining. It is unclear whether she started on the bench due to her injury last weekend.

Danielle van de Donk, who played for Arsenal for six years, was at the base at Lyon. Damaris Egurrola, another Orange international from Lyon, came into play.

Lyon misses star players

Lyon won the Champions League final against Barcelona in May but stood no chance against Arsenal tonight. Lyon were without Norwegian star player Ada Hegerberg. She was missed more than Miedema at Arsenal.

Arsenal were 2-0 after twenty minutes with goals from Caitlin Foord and Frida Maanum. Things seemed to get exciting in the first half when Melvine Malard drew back a bit in the 27th minute (2:1). Shortly before halftime, however, Beth Mead shortened to two (3:1).

In the second half, she and Caitlin Foord went one step further, resulting in the big hit on the board (5-1).

Other duels

Group mates Arsenal and Lyon also played each other tonight. Juventus defeated FC Zurich 2-0 in Switzerland. Arsenal are currently leading in Group C. The Dutchman Lineth Beerensteyn was not selected by the Italians.

Group D was also played. FC Bayern Munich defeated FC Rosengård 2-1 at home. Barcelona minced Benfica (9-0) in-house.

The other two groups will be played tomorrow.
