Schedule disruption: Sinner abandons round of 16 in Paris

Fought until the early hours, but then too exhausted to continue playing: Jannik Sinner.

It was a major nuisance every day, now it has consequences for the first time. In Paris-Bercy, one of the nine largest ATP tournaments, six matches on the main court are scheduled every day – with the expected consequences. Whoever gets the last match of the day will play until well after midnight.

Jannik Sinner (22), fourth in the world rankings, was particularly hard hit on Wednesday evening. The in-form Italian, who has won in Toronto, Beijing and Vienna in recent months, started his match against Mackenzie McDonald at half past one and finished it more than two hours later. French Open finalist Casper Ruud expresses his dissatisfaction with X: “Bravo ATP Tour. What a joke,” he wrote.

Sinner was scheduled to compete in his round of 16 against Alex de Minaur the following day at 5 p.m. But he gives up and explains his forfeit with “fatigue”. The schedule, which has people shaking their heads, could now even disrupt qualifying for the ATP Finals.

While Sinner has already secured his ticket for the gala meeting of the best eight players of the year, De Minaur is part of the quartet that still has a chance of winning the last two free places. For that, the Australian would have to win the tournament.

Stefanos Tsitsipas secured sixth place on the grid with a victory over Alexander Zverev. Behind them are the German Holger Rune and Hubert Hurkacz in seventh to ninth place. (SDA)
