Joe Thornton says goodbye.

At the age of 44 it’s over. Joe Thornton announces his career as a professional ice hockey player on social media.

“Hey, since so many people keep asking me, I guess I should tell you that I’m officially ending my NHL career,” he said in a video the San Jose Sharks published on their channels. “I thought you’d heard this before, but you kept asking. So I’m going to stop now.”

During his career, Thornton, who was drafted No. 1 overall by the Boston Bruins in 1997, played 1,714 NHL games. With 430 goals and 1,109 assists, he is 12th on the list of all-time top scorers. During his 24 seasons in North America, he also played for the San Jose Sharks, the Toronto Maple Leafs and most recently the Florida Panthers. He completed his last assignment about a year and a half ago.

85 games for the HCD

In addition to the NHL, Thornton has also left his mark in the National League. He played for HC Davos during the 2004/05 and 2012/13 lockout seasons and returned to Switzerland in 2020 for twelve games. In total he donned the Graubünden jersey 95 times and scored 111 points. At his first engagement he became champion and won the Spengler Cup.

The center also celebrated success with the Canadian national team. Thornton finished second at the 2005 world championships and won Olympic gold at home in Vancouver in 2010.

Thornton leaves it open what he will do now as an officially retired ice hockey player. But he says he will definitely be at an ice rink. (beer)
