The 16,117 spectators in the arena in Newark, New Jersey will get their money’s worth on Wednesday evening. The Devils made a monumental false start and were already behind 3-0 after just under 18 minutes. The Swiss goalkeeper Akira Schmid is not to be envied: the Emmentaler missed three of eight shots and was replaced by Vitek Vanecek at halftime. His compatriot Jonas Siegenthaler also does not look good if he loses the puck before the score is 0-1.

With the Czech in goal, the Devils began a spectacular comeback in the middle third. The deficit was made up in the 27th minute with three goals within 131 seconds. Timo Meier and captain Nico Hischier score 2:3 and 3:3. It was the first goal of the season for Meier, who also recorded an assist in the 1-1 draw, while Hischier scored a second time a day after his season premiere. New Jersey took advantage of the momentum and took the lead shortly after halftime with a second goal from Tyler Toffoli.

Next home loss for New Jersey

But then a two-minute penalty against Hischier, shortly before the second break, caused the new turnaround. In the subsequent power play, Washington equalized at 4:4 at the start of the final period, only to take the lead again just under two minutes later. In the end, Alexander Ovetschkin made the final decision with his 896th goal in the NHL to make it 6:4 into the empty net.

For the New Jersey Devils it is the third home loss in a row in the fourth home game of the season. Nevertheless, with seven points from six games, they started significantly better than Washington, who won for the first time after 60 minutes at the sixth attempt. (SDA/dti)
