Normally, Anthony Joshua (34) stands in the boxing ring under bright spotlights, surrounded by a euphoric atmosphere in the spectator stands. He is far from silence and loneliness. It’s all about him as a person. Everyone wants something from him. No wonder the need for inner peace is growing.
That’s why Joshua isolated himself from the outside world during a four-day self-reflection concept to sit alone in the darkness with his own thoughts. To do this, he went to the Sky Cave Dark Retreat, a retreat in southern Oregon, where he entered a darkened room with no social interactions or connections to the outside world. The stay cost the two-time world heavyweight champion $2,000.
No telephone, no television
Shortly before joining, he explained his motivations for this spiritual journey in an interview with “Mens Health”: “Life is all about experiences. I want to have more character and more experiences. I do it for character reasons,” Joshua clarifies.
Finally, Joshua checked in on Snapchat during his arrival and gave a behind-the-scenes look. “What I’m trying to do is show myself that I don’t actually need much. All I need is me,” says Joshua. He will not have a telephone, television, radio or audio books at his disposal. Only his thoughts. The meals are pushed under a door.
The short trip ended last Friday. He has not yet shared his impressions with the public. Just a day later, the boxer was drawn back into the crowd. He was guest of honor on the grid during the Formula 1 race in the US. (Gentlemen)
